Lumps after hyaluronic acid treatment – when will they disappear and how to deal with them?

Thickening and hardening of tissue, commonly referred to as lumps, is one of the most common problems faced by people after hyaluronic acid injections. Patients wonder whether the lumps will disappear on their own, whether they need to be treated in some way, whether they mean that the procedure was performed incorrectly, and what they should do next. For this reason, many myths have arisen about hyaluronic acid lumps, which are passed on by people who have undergone the procedure and which usually do not hold true. In this article, we take a closer look at so-called hyaluronic acid lumps – we consider what they actually are, whether they will disappear on their own, and how to deal with them.
What exactly are hyaluronic acid lumps?
The answer to this question may be surprising to some, but it is worth dispelling any doubts once and for all. Hyaluronic acid lumps are not dense, thick hyaluronic acid that has changed its consistency as a result of injecting too much of it. This is what many people believe to be the cause of the lumps. However, hyaluronic acid is in the form of a gel – it is impossible for it to evolve into a more compact and hard substance in the body. Therefore, even administering too much hyaluronic acid does not cause lumps to form.
So what are these lumps that you can feel on your lips? They are usually bruises and slight swelling that have appeared as a result of the injections. After the hyaluronic acid injection treatment, the skin on the lips is covered with micro-wounds, which may give the impression that you can feel hardening and thickening on it. Minor inflammation may also occur, which is solely a defensive reaction of the body to the foreign substance being introduced. Therefore, lumps after hyaluronic acid do not mean that the procedure was performed poorly.
Will the lumps after hyaluronic acid disappear on their own?
If the thickening and hardening that you feel on the skin of your lips are simply micro-injuries and swelling, you do not need to worry, especially immediately after the procedure. This condition is completely normal! The delicate skin of the lips needs a lot of time to regenerate properly, especially since it contains a lot of blood vessels, which make it prone to swelling. Therefore, you do not need to worry if you still feel slight thickening up to 14 days after the procedure. After this time, the lumps should disappear on their own.
However, if this condition persists for more than two weeks, consult the person who performed your hyaluronic acid injection. It is possible that inflammation has developed in several places on your lips. This often happens if the hyaluronic acid used was of poor quality and did not have the appropriate certificates allowing it to be used. The patient's immune system may also have an impact on this – people with low immunity are more susceptible to inflammation.
Your doctor will certainly know what to do in such a situation. Sometimes it is enough to simply squeeze out the lumps, and sometimes it will be necessary to dissolve the hyaluronic acid using special hyaluronidase preparations.
How to massage lumps after hyaluronic acid?
The answer is quite simple – do not massage them! If the lumps you feel are micro-injuries and swelling, massaging them will make things worse – your lips will hurt more and may take longer to heal. If the lumps are a sign of inflammation, massaging them will not help – you will need to see a doctor anyway.
Lumps after hyaluronic acid are not a complication to be afraid of – in most cases, they will disappear on their own. If this does not happen after two weeks, there are effective ways to remove them.
